Grid-tied Systems
Residences with a grid-tied solar electrical system are permitted to sell their energy to the utility grid. Electricity delivered to the grid may be compensated in several ways.
Net metering: the owner of the producing renewable energy power source receives compensation from the utility company for its net outflow of power. In the US, net metering policies vary by jurisdiction.
Feed-in tariff: the producer is paid for every kilowatt hour delivered to the grid through a special tariff based on a contract with the distribution company or other power authority.
In the U.S. grid-interactive power systems are covered by specific provisions in the National Electric Code.

Off-Grid Systems
If your home or ranch is located far from the nearest power lines (the “grid”) off-grid solar power generating systems can provide a reliable, clean and silent solution. The heart of the system, the solar panels, have no moving parts, are silent, clean and have a long life span.
Components of the off-grid solar power generator include: solar panels, batteries, charge controller, a pure sine wave inverter, grounding, surge protector, circuit breakers and monitoring equipment.

Grid-Tied Systems with Battery Back-Up
Grid-tied battery back-up systems are a hybrid of an off-Grid system and a grid-tied system. When power is present they operate like a standard grid-tied system to produce power for the house, store excess in batteries and sell the rest back to the utility. During a power outage this system quickly converts to battery and solar power to maintain uninterrupted power.
Battery systems are more expensive than grid-tie systems but they are the most reliable way to provide continuous power regardless of weather or utility power outages. Battery systems are the best fit for those concerned about the grid reliability.
